Early in my career, I worked for this great guy, Owen Mitchell. He was a little on the shorter side and he had a very strong Scottish accent. I loved that about him. His accent was very engaging to me. Anyway, one day we were talking in my office and he said, ?Josh, there are certain key elements that every business plan needs to have.? He went on to say that most plans get it wrong by packing in tons of graphs and charts that don?t say anything. A business plan needs to be able to call for direction. So Owen?s key elements are:
1- who ? are your customers
2- what ? are you going to do
3- where ? are you going to do it
4- when ? is the timeline
5- how ? are you going to do it
6- with what ? resources
Sometime later I added ? why ? are you doing it. To me ? that?s what makes the story of a brand. It?s what makes a business yours, giving it life or personality.
You can get fancier with charts and graphs but I think you?re wasting your time. If you can thoroughly answer the questions above, you are well on your towards plotting your future dreams.
