Mayor Nancy McFarlane issued the following statement today in response to the announced Oct. 1, retirement of Police Chief Harry P. Dolan.

"Over the past five years, Chief Dolan has shown tremendous leadership at the Raleigh Police Department (RPD). The success of the community policing initiative and emphasis on officer training has helped RPD build and preserve its reputation as one of the nation?s best police departments.

"The chief has emphasized the importance of training for officers and offered more opportunities for professional development within RPD, while also maintaining a focus on citizen safety throughout Raleigh. Through the community policing program, Chief Dolan?s tenure has seen increased engagement of young people in the community and opportunities for community outreach. We?ve also maintained low crime rates, which has helped secure Raleigh?s reputation as a great place to live and work.

I am hopeful that our next police chief exemplifies similar qualities in leadership and strategic thinking that will help move the RPD forward in the 21 century. The City is fortunate to have Deputy Chief Cassandra Deck-Brown and her more than 20 years? experience at RPD to rely upon as interim police chief, while the City Manager leads the selection process for Chief Dolan?s replacement.

I congratulate and wish Chief Dolan the best for his well-deserved retirement and in his future endeavors."
