South Korea puts historic military pact with Japan on hold

South Korea has postponed the signing of a landmark military intelligence agreement with Japan following a wave of anti-Japanese sentiment in the East Asian nation.

According to the BBC, South Korea announced the news less than one hour before both countries were scheduled to formally sign their first military pact since Japanese colonial rule over the country came to a halt at the end of World War II.

The Yonhap news agency reported that the main focus of the pact was to share military intelligence about North Korea and its nuclear program. It would also call for the sharing of information on China's growing military.

More from GlobalPost:?South Korea, Japan to sign military intelligence agreement aimed at North Korea

Japan approved the pact on Friday following South Korea?s approval earlier this week, but at the last minute the government in Seoul called off the signing ceremony in order to undertake further consultations before going ahead.

According to the Associated Press, the agreement had caused outcry in South Korea, with opponents staging protests and critics arguing that the government had given the pact the go-ahead without holding proper public debate.

According to CNN, Japan and South Korea have also been embroiled in a dispute over a group of islands known as Takeshima in Japan and Dokdo in Korea. Tokyo insists that it enjoys sovereignty over all islets in the sea east of Korea, while Seoul claims that it regained all Korean territory once it secured independence in 1945.?

Souad Massi Princess Of North African Song?back In Us & Canada After 8 Years Algerian Star Showcases New Work In Concerts At

Occurs on:

July 7 : 6:30 p.m. - 11 p.m.

Neighborhood: Park Slope
Prospect Park Bandshell
Prospect Park West and 9th Street
Brooklyn, NY 11215

Souad Massi, Islamic Woman, sings for Freedom and celebrates Independence. The Princess of North African song?Back in US & Canada after 8 YearsAlgerian Star Showcases New Work in Concerts at The Kennedy Center, Montreal Jazz Festival and Celebrate Brooklyn With her luminous, silken voice, her deeply poetic songs, and her exquisitely versatile band, Souad Massi makes her first appearances on US stages since 2004. Massi performs at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC on June 30, Montreal Jazz Festival on July 4 and headlines at New York?s Celebrate Brooklyn on July 7 Massi returns as one of the most celebrated and respected singers in North Africa and the Middle East today. Her 2010 release ? Houria (Liberty) (Wrasse Records) is inspired by poetry, philosophy and the writings of the 14th century Arab historian Ibn Khaldun. ?When you are young,? says Massi, ?you are impressed with superstars and millionaires. But now, I am impressed by people who are intelligent and visionary. Ibn Khaldun spoke about the changes in the world, the mentality that people had and wanted, how individuals were demanding their rights, and the struggles of people. When I read him, I imagined that there could be a great change in the Arab world.? This was the spark that led to ? Houria. Massi sings about the aspirations of women, workers, lovers, the oppressed and disempowered. The songs on ? Houria both foreshadowed and provided a fitting soundtrack for the uprisings of the Arab Spring. So it?s no surprise that in the past year, Massi has toured the Middle East and Gulf states twice, electrifying audiences with the gentle tsunami of her pliant voice, her powerful messages, and her richly multicultural music, which blends the sonic textures of folk and rock, as well as African rhythms with the elegance of Arabic poetry and song. Massi says that despite differences in Arabic dialects, audiences throughout the region understand most of what she sings. ?So we communicate,? says Massi. ?If I sing about a girl who can't go out the house because of tradition, Arab women immediately discover themselves in that song.? While moved by Massi?s poignant lyrics, audiences have also watched her songs mature musically, growing ever more dynamic and muscular in the hands of her veteran band?a team of musicians that has remained together for a decade developing extraordinary sensitivity and chemistry. ?When a song is new, it?s like a baby,? says Massi. ?I like to protect it, let it grow a little before people hear it. But on the stage, songs really come to life. They grow, they change, they evolve.? Massi?s 2012 tour comes as Algeria celebrates 50 years of independence. Massi says, ?Algeria is a country that suffered a lot with war [1954-62]. They were millions of people who died during that war. My mother's whole family was killed, so I respect their lives, their choices, their sacrifices.? After her tour, Massi returns to a variety of projects. In 2012, Souad is making forays into the world of cinema. Her song ?Raoui? is part of the soundtrack for Sacha Baron Cohen?s new film The Dictator. And, Souad is slated to star in August in a new feature film by award winning Palestinian director Najwa Najjar. The film is a meditation on love and war on the West Bank, and will mark Souad?s first appearance on the silver screen. She will also perform with Choeurs de Cordoba (Voices of Cordoba), a 9-piece ensemble featuring Massi and flamenco guitarist Eric Fernandez. This group explores the poetry, song and dance of Al Andalus, a realm in which Christian, Muslim and Jewish musicians collaborated fruitfully in the 8th, 9th and 10th centuries. Massi believes the music and history of Al Andalus contain important messages for our time. She describes the players in Coeurs de Cordoba as ?a mix of Muslims, Jews, atheists, Armenians, French, gypsies, and Arabs. Why can't we in our time do the same thing that was done in the 10th century? That's the message. And it's the truth.? Massi has also begun writing new songs for a forthcoming CD by her band. She will tour the new project across North America in Spring 2013. Deeply engaged, inspired equally by the glories of the past and the tumultuous upheavals of the present, Massi is at the top of her game, truly one of the most inspiring and gifted singers on the global scene today.

Article Marketing Tricks You Haven't Seen Anywhere Else | Online ...

Let your audience know how they can benefit from your article right away. Let your readers know what to expect from an article with the title. This will encourage more readers to choose to read it.

Whatever you can use to increase your traffic will be beneficial. A no-follow directory still gets readers looking at your articles. The most popular No Follow online article directories include Buzzle, ArticleBase, ArticleAlley and ArticlesFactory. For the best results, submit to all of them.

The best way to go about writing content is to use your natural way of speaking. Although a thesaurus can be a handy tool, using one for nearly every word in an article is a clear no-no. Your customers will realize that the article is not genuinely from you and will ignore it.

Find fun photos that you are allowed to post. If the pictures or graphics are your own, link them back to your site.

Self discipline and proper organization are vital when preparing your article marketing content. Make sure you have everything you need before you start writing. Set aside a certain time each day to write, and use that time effectively.

You can engage a reader by beginning your article with a humorous anecdote. All you need to do is tell a joke, but know what kind to tell. Having the right humor can help you create a highly regarded article.

Focus on providing your visitors with useful content. The key to building long-term business relationships with your visitors and potential clients lies in providing them with valuable, informative content.

Using your articles to simply declare your competence in a field is neither helpful to your readers nor effective at enhancing your reputation. The best way to convince readers to trust you is to offer them good information that helps them. If the content you provide is valuable, your readers will come to trust you as an authority.

One way that you can ensure you are relating to your readers on a personal level is to write as though you were speaking with a friend. This makes articles more enjoyable to readers by keeping the mood of your article light and informal. If your readers think of you like a friend, they are sure to visit your site often.

By only using one main keyword per article, you can greatly increase your sales. Keywords should be placed throughout the site, including titles, headings, and even the URL. Make sure your keyword is scattered throughout the main section of the article, as well. Your article will then be found by user generated searches, and your traffic and sales will increase.

Create an author box that is appropriate and effective. Tell readers about your background and the reasons for your writing. You?re going to want to ensure that your main site is linked back from the author box. While running multiple niche websites, make certain to link the right site to the right article.

If you are planning on marketing an article, take the time to study how others have done it before. By knowing what is out there, it will be easier to tailor articles to make them as effective as possible.

Use language that is genuine and enthusiastic in your articles, so you can establish a bond with your readers. Boring technical writing will not make readers want to continue to read your articles.

Vary the types of articles you write to keep it interesting for your readers, as well as for yourself. Educate beginning learners on some technical terms that will help them feel like they are on their way to becoming an expert, but don?t ignore your more advanced audience while you do it. One technique that draws attention is to phrase the title as a question. By the end of the article you will have given the reader a complete answer.

Open big. Make sure the beginning of your article contains information that will hook potential readers. Grab readers attention by asking questions, offering information or doing other things that demands they take notice. Your reader?s initial opinions will be based on that first paragraph. The words you choose can determine whether they continue to read your content, or if they exit the page and look for something else.

Use good planning strategies to decide the topics of your articles. When you know so much about your niche, it is easy to forget some of the simple things you may have struggled with when you first started out.

Make sure your articles are packed with useful information. When your content is connected to your business, you look like a pro to your audience and can appear more trusting to them. As original content, these articles will also boost your rank in search engine results, since they favor sites with plenty of unique content.

It is never a good idea to post articles that have been published in multiple places on the web. You want to stand out in article marketing. You will be competing with many other sites if your content is too similar to theirs. Only share unique, original content or pieces that have only been published one or two times.

Make each article a segue for an action to take. Readers may want to see a concrete solution in five steps, but usually it will take a few more than that. Determine what this next step is before you sit down to write the article. Incorporate this into the article, and guide your readers to your paid solution. This is an effective way to make your product or service more attractive.

Research all you can about article marketing. The impact on your business can be shocking.

What Makes Content Management System Important in Web Design?

A website that is current and has everything that the target audience is looking for is bound to achieve success in terms of popularity and search engine ranking. This is the reason why businesses that take their online presence seriously, invest in highly professional and result oriented website design that yields them amazing results in the beginning. However, every organisation grows over the years, adds new products, achieves new milestones, and if your website (that was launched 2 years back) has the same content as before and doesn?t offer any information on latest achievements and information, it is definitely going to be termed as obsolete, and no user would be interested in your business online.

Then what is that one thing that can keep your website current and valuable for the target audience at all times? The answer is ? A Content Management System (CMS).

The other answers could be hiring a professional web design company each year to update your website and renew the design. However, a smart decision would be to invest in a CMS solution tailored specifically for your needs and empowering you to update the website design without being a webmaster.

There are so many things that can be done with a content management system ? you can update the content, add/remove images, change the design elements and also include some add-on applications ? all in a simplistic and quick manner. Joomla is one of the popular CMS solutions available in the market that allows you to make the site more interactive, user-friendly and up-to-date.

Here, are some of the most important features of content management systems-

These brilliant features make content management system (CMS) a must-have for each website design owner as they get to avail numerous benefits such as ?

Time saving: No longer do you have to contact your programmer or website designer to make every small change that is required in the web design.

You can simply apply the CMS solution and make the necessary changes in no time. So whether you want to add more information on the site, add a new web page, or remove some images, you can do it simply by logging in to the interface and make the required changes.

Saves design costs: Sometimes getting your entire website redesigned is necessary. However, if you put in your money on redesigning your website each year with the help of a web designer, you will end with a huge bill each year. To cut cost, you do all the necessary changes without spending on the expensive redesigning jobs all the time.

Ensures easy data storage and retrieval: For greater security of your data, a CMS solution enables you to easily store all your website data in a database. Whenever you want to use it, you can export the data easily.

Freshness of the content intact: With a CMS, you can automatically update the content, remove the outdated information and publish the content as scheduled.

A Mobile POS Solution Increases Poolside Food and Drink Sales at ...

PASO ROBLES, Calif., June 22, 2012 ? Gaylord Hotels, a pioneer in the hotel and convention industry with a collection of five award-winning resort and convention centers across the U.S., was looking for a cost-efficient solution that would enable it to provide more attentive and personalized service to its guests. The hotels offered poolside service and with acres of pool area to cover, servers spent a lot of time walking between the pools, bar, and kitchen to enter and check on orders, and process payments. This resulted in long wait times and had a negative impact on sales and customer satisfaction.

Daily Systems teamed up with SkyWire Media to provide a wireless POS solution based on the Instant Guest Response software. The solution has all the features of a stationary POS system but fits in the palm of a hand. The mobile POS device is fully integrated with Gaylord?s existing POS system, enabling real-time tracking of the orders and open checks. The servers use the iPod touch in combination with Daily Systems? iAPS sled, which is a unique all-in-one solution with a bar code scanner, credit card reader, smart card reader, and receipt printer.

?The poolside ordering and payment solution significantly enhances the productivity of the servers, and guests spend less time waiting,? says Thomas Castleberry, COO at SkyWire Media. ?The cutting-edge mobile POS solution is also a factor in creating the impression that the Gaylord Hotels is a technologically savvy and modern company.?

?In today?s business, time is money,? says Rene Oliver, CEO and President of Daily Systems. ?The iAPS Sled mobile POS device enables businesses to provide more timely, accurate and better overall customer service.?

Scientific Arabian: Revolutions Then and Now

al-Jazari's Clock/Wikimedia Commons/Al-Jazari

al-Jazari's Clock/Wikimedia Commons/Al-Jazari

Walking through streets of Cairo, I?ve rarely heard talk of the unchecked pollution coughed from vehicles exhaust pipes, or of speculation of how many homes could be powered if only the vast deserts surrounding the city planted with solar farms, or of aspirations of sending the first Egyptian to space. No, the primary topics of conversation in the ubiquitous taxi cabs, hookah shops, and the neo-classically styled salons of private homes hasn?t changed in the thirty years I?ve been visiting my birth country ? politics, religion and the next meal. To hear talk of science, one needs to press ear to stone.

Not any stone will do. The rock must be old, hewn from millennia-old quarries to lay the foundation of institutes like Baghdad?s House of Wisdom and Cairo?s House of Knowledge, cornerstones of a golden age of Arab civilization spanning four centuries and reaching from Spain to Persia. If these stones could talk, they?d speak of revolution ? not the one sweeping through the Middle East today ? but of an intellectual revolution seeded by Greek knowledge and watered by a thirst for an empirical understanding of the world God (in the creationist view of the time) created.

Perhaps the stones would speak of engineers like al-Jazari, who pioneered the camshaft and practical application of automata, or of ibn Sina (Avicenna to the West), whose masterpiece laid the foundation of modern medicine. If we use our eyes and not our ears, perhaps we?d catch a glimpse of ibn al-Haytham, the father of optics and pioneer of the modern scientific method.

The spirit of the pursuit of knowledge would flee the Arab world, escaping the destruction of Baghdad?s House of Wisdom at the hands of Mongol invaders, but it would survive in the West. Just as Greek knowledge provided the foundation of an Arab scientific revolution, so too would Arab knowledge transferred to Europe lay the groundwork for the Renaissance in which the language of Arab science ? al-jebr, kimiya, al-khwarizmi ? would become Latinized to algebra, chemistry, and algorithm.

ibn Sina/Wikimedia Commons

ibn Sina/Wikimedia Commons

Today, many critics of Arab society rightfully ask, ?what have you done for me lately?? Where are the polymaths, the inventors, the free thinkers of the Arab world? Decades of occupation followed by stifling dictatorships drove many scientists and engineers (including my own father) to Western institutions where they would have the resources to pursue their research. Now it is the Arabic that borrows from English to describe technological advances such as the radio, television, and computers.

There are signs that scientific revolution is following on the heels of political change, the millennia-long dark age is lifting, and the ?baton of enlightenment? is being shared, if not passed, to the Arab world. In Egypt, Dr. Ahmed Zewail?s vision of a science city in Egypt is being realized after over a decade of stagnation, and in Saudi Arabia, an oil-rich monarch is once again investing in science in the tradition of Caliphates of the Arab Golden Age. In the series, ?Scientific Arabian,? we?ll take a closer look at the reemergence of science in the Arab world, and the influence the West and the Arab Spring are having upon it.

Former Goldman Sachs director convicted in NYC

(AP) ? A former Goldman Sachs director was found guilty Friday of feeding confidential information to a corrupt hedge fund manager, becoming the most prominent defendant convicted so far in a wide-ranging probe conducted by investigators armed with wiretaps.

Rajat Gupta ? born in India, educated at Harvard and well-known in corporate America ? was convicted by a jury of conspiracy and three counts of securities fraud, and acquitted of two other securities fraud counts. He showed no visible reaction as the verdict was read, though his adult daughters hugged and wept.

The trial of the 63-year-old Gupta, and the one last year for former billionaire Raj Rajaratnam, pulled back the curtain on how the two longtime friends and Wall Street titans navigated the turbulent waters of the 2008 economic meltdown.

The pair had "public sides of success," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Reed Brodsky said at closing arguments at the closely watched white-collar trial. "But concealed from the public was a different side ? a side that committed crimes."

The prosecutor argued that secret recordings of phone calls between the two men showed that Gupta was so brazen about sharing Goldman board secrets it sounded like "he was talking about what happened at a Yankee game yesterday."

Defense attorney Gary P. Naftalis countered that the FBI wiretaps, phone records and other evidence presented by the government had only created the "illusion" that legitimate business dealings were somehow sinister.

"That is a gambit that can bamboozle people into thinking something was proven when it wasn't," Naftalis told the jury. Outside court, he said he was disappointed in the guilty verdicts.

"We believe the facts of this case demonstrate that Mr. Gupta is innocent," Naftalis said. "He always acted with honesty and integrity."

"Rajat Gupta broke the law, plain and simple," FBI Assistant Director Janice K. Fedarcyk said in a statement.

Rajaratnam, founder of the $7 billion Galleon hedge fund, was sentenced last October to an 11-year prison term on an insider-trading conviction. Less than a month later, Gupta was charged in a separate case built on the some of the same wiretap and other evidence.

Allegations that Gupta conspired with a convicted white-collar criminal represented a fall from grace: The defendant is a former chief of McKinsey & Co., a highly regarded global consulting firm that zealously guards its reputation for discretion and integrity. He also is a onetime director of the huge consumer products company Procter & Gamble Co.

During the trial that began on May 20, the government highlighted a Sept. 23, 2008, phone call it said was made from Gupta to Rajaratnam. The call came only minutes after Gupta had learned during a confidential conference call about how Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway planned to invest $5 billion in Goldman ? a blockbuster deal that wouldn't be announced until the stock market closed at 4 p.m.

"That news was going to be very good news for Goldman Sachs," another prosecutor, Richard Tarlowe said in closing arguments. "The average ordinary investor had no way of knowing that. ... Until the announcement, it was confidential."

Records showed that moments after the phone call ended at 3:55 p.m., Rajaratnam purchased $40 million in Goldman stock ? an 11th hour trade that ended up making him nearly $1 million.

The hedge fund manager's assistant, Caryn Eisenberg, testified at trial that it was the only call her boss received on his private line that day between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.

"That evidence is devastating for the defendant. ... If you believe Ms. Eisenberg, it's over ? the defendant is guilty," Tarlowe said.

Also played at trial was a wiretap of a July 2008 phone call during which Rajaratnam grilled Gupta about whether the Goldman Sachs board had discussed acquiring a struggling bank, like Wachovia, or an insurance company.

"Have you heard anything along that line?" Rajaratnam asked Gupta.

"Yeah," Gupta responded. "This was a big discussion at the board meeting."

In another recorded phone call in 2008, Rajaratnam told one of his traders that he had got a tip "from someone who's on the board of Goldman Sachs" that Goldman was facing an unexpected quarterly loss.

Prosecutors argued the sequence of events ? the phone calls, the subsequent trades and Rajaratnam's boasting about his inside connection ? could not be dismissed as mere coincidence. Gupta, they said, was motivated to help Rajaratnam because he had a financial stake in some of the hedge fund manager's business ventures.

"What was good for Raj Rajaratnam was good for Mr. Gupta," Brodsky said.

Naftalis countered that most the evidence was specific to the "secret world" of Rajaratnam and not about Gupta.

"I sometimes wondered whether Raj Rajaratnam was the man on trial," he said. His client, he added, was a victim of "pure guilt by association."

Summer Barbecue / Grilling Guide - Low Sodium Blog

If you?re in need a of a little extra low-sodium summer mojo, read on!

We?ve compiled a list of five of our favorite low-sodium summertime?barbecue/grilling recipes.?Mix up your summer grill with chicken, fish, or oysters ? and compliment it with a remoulade (a tasty alternative to coleslaw) or fresh fruit salsa. We think our recipes make for a perfect summer?picnic or party. ?We?ve ?stealthfully? tested out our recipes on our friends and neighbors, not telling them it was ?low sodium?, and received comments like ? wow, this is RAD?.

Get your BBQ on!

Chicken

Cajun Chicken - Sizzling hot! The same spices for blackened chicken can be used for grilling on the fire (instead of a cast iron pan). Mixed in advance, our Cajun spices pack up nicely for car camping as well. We typically serve this with a mango salsa (recipe below).

BBQ Beer Can Chicken Recipe. Literally, this is one of our most favorite recipes. We had our neighbors over this past weekend and we barbecued separate chickens for each family. Self-service could not not be easier - we "plated" each roasted chicken on a large carving board (the left-overs were taken home by each family) - making clean up a breeze!

Salmon

Cedar Plank Salmon with Pluot Glaze. Grilling on a cedar plank (one time use) is another fun and easy thing to do - that adds a lot of flavor complexity. If it's your first time grilling with cedar planks, you'll want to keep in mind that the wood at the lumber yard usually is sprayed with chemicals, making it unusable for cooking. Be sure to use wood planks that are specifically marked "for culinary use".

This simple baked salmon recipe can be adapted for the cedar plank (instructions on how to use a cedar plank are part of the pluot recipe above)

Oysters

Freshly grilled oysters are our favorite! Grilling oysters is a quick and easy! We whipped up a simple ginger-citrus dipping sauce that's pairs well with oysters.

Remoulade

C?leri R?moulade (celeriac / celery root remoulade) makes a nice and refreshing alternative to coleslaw.

Salsas

Tantalizing Mango Salsa! Along with our favorite fruit based salsa recipe, there's also a link to "How to Pick and Cut the Best Mangoes"

Grilled Pineapple Salsa. Grilling helps to bring out and highlight the sweet flavor notes, giving us more flavor.

Stimulus won't save the economy

Both gold bugs and stock market bulls are counting on the Fed to come through with another economic stimulus.? And it probably will. But the money won't benefit those who really need it.

By Bill Bonner / June 9, 2012

Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington, before the Joint Economic Committee hearing on the health of nation's economy, the slumping recovery, and the European debt crisis, on Thursday, June 7, 2012. Bonner argues that another round of Federal stimulus would do little to ease the US economic downturn.

Not much follow through in the stock market yesterday. The Dow was up?but only 46 points.

Meanwhile, gold fell $46.

We long for clarity. For a day of reckoning. But it seems far in the future. Yesterday, the world waited for Mr. Bernanke to reveal his intentions. Instead, he said he was keeping his options open.

That was good enough to keep some steam in the stock market. But not enough to keep gold going up.

Both gold bugs and stock market bulls are counting on the Fed to come through. And it probably will.

We saw yesterday how the 1% got to be so rich. The feds ? aided and abetted by consumers and the financial industry ? bubbled up the amount of cash and credit in the US by 50 times in the last 50 years.

?That explosion of credit changed the world,? writes Richard Duncan in his new book, The New Depression.

Yep?for one thing it made the rich richer. That money didn?t go to wage earners. It went into stocks and bonds ? the assets owned by the 1%.

The stock market began its epic march up the mountain in 1982. Since then, it?s gone up 13 times (as measured by the Dow).

US GDP is up about 13 times too.

But much of the ?growth? in stocks and GDP in this period was phony. The tape measure, used to track growth, was calibrated in dollars. And the dollars ? stretched by the feds ? lied.

Just look at what has happened in the last ten years. From its low in the early 2000s, stocks are up about 50%. Investors might think they are ahead of the game.

But measure that increase in terms of gold?and the gains disappear. Instead, stocks are DOWN 16%. In terms of oil, stocks are down even more ? 43%.

And now the feds tell us the economy is in ?recovery.? Yes, they admit, it?s not a great recovery. But the economy is growing. And if we wait long enough everything will be put right.

Oh yeah? At this rate the US will never reach full employment. Because, each month, more people are looking for work than finding it. Why? Because little of this ?growth? is real. It?s just what you get when you put an extra $2 trillion of cash and credit into the system.

But investors don?t seem to care whether the growth is real or not. Instead, they?re waitin??prayin??hopin? for another round of MONEY! They want that old elixir?more cash and credit?that Miracle-Gro that the feds use to turn the economy green.

Oh yes, dear reader, we are five years into the Great Correction crisis?and once again, the world (and especially Barack Obama) turns its weary eyes to Dr. Bernanke.

?Touch us?heal us? Take away our pains. Lift us up to paradise.?

Or, at least put us back in the White House!

And word on the street is that Ben Bernanke is getting ready.

?Fed considers more action?? says The Wall Street Journal.

?Stocks rise on hopes of more stimulus,? reports The Financial Times.

But not all the Fed team is on the same page. Richard Fisher, of the Fed bank of Dallas, is clearly not:

?I believe that were we to go down the path to further accommodation at this juncture, we would not simply be pushing on a string but would be viewed as accomplice to the mischief that has become synonymous with Washington.?

Our guess is that Mr. Fisher will be left behind. If not now?later.

Matthew O?Brien, writing in The Atlantic, explains why.

Save Us, Ben Bernanke, You?re Our Only Hope
?By Matthew O?Brien

This may not be our darkest hour, but the disappointing May jobs report showed the US economy once again slowing towards stall speed. It?s not just the anemic 69,000 jobs the economy added last month. More disconcerting were the sharp downward revisions to previous months. It looks like we could be in for an unwelcome rerun of the summer doldrums we have gotten to know all too well in 2010 and 2011.

Markets have a bad feeling about this. It isn?t just about the deteriorating US outlook. Europe and China are turning to the dark side of growth too. The euro is continuing its game of Schr?dinger?s currency: At any moment it is both saved and doomed. Right now, it?s looking more and more doomed. Then there?s the slowdown in China ? along with India and Brazil. These economies powered global growth during the dark days of 2008 and 2009, but seem certifiably wobbly now.

The Fed is our last hope ? and there isn?t another. Republicans in Congress continue to block further fiscal stimulus, despite historically low borrowing costs and a clear need for better infrastructure. So that leaves Ben Bernanke & Co. as the last and only line of defense.

Will the Fed be an accomplice to Washington?s mischief? You bet. Because this is an economy that has depended on more cash and credit for at least 30 years. It can?t stop now.

Here?s another Fed governor, more in sync with the times. The Wall Street Journal has the report:

The Federal Reserve must stand ready to do more if the US growth outlook worsens, a top central banker said Wednesday.

If the outlook deteriorates such that the unemployment rate doesn?t fall to levels consistent with the central bank?s mandate and if the medium-term outlook for inflation falls significantly below the Fed?s 2% target, ?then additional monetary accommodation would be warranted,? John Williams, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, said in prepared remarks to Seattle-area community leaders in Bellevue, Wash.

Mr. Williams is a voting member of the policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee.

You heard it here first, dear reader: There?s no reverse gear in this car. It won?t back up to correct its mistakes. Instead, it races along until it hits a brick wall.

Regards,

Bill Bonner,

Phillies beat Orioles to break 6-game skid

By BEN WALKER

AP Baseball Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:38 p.m. ET June 8, 2012

BALTIMORE (AP) - Jim Thome felt right at home - in the cleanup spot, in the DH slot.

Thome broke loose for the first time this year, Shane Victorino homered and drove in five runs, and the Philadelphia Phillies emphatically ended a season-worst six-game losing streak by beating the Baltimore Orioles 9-6 on Friday night.

"You always want to get at-bats. You always want to contribute," Thome said.

Thome doubled twice, legged out an infield hit and got his first RBI of the season. Mike Fontenot also homered to the delight of a Camden Yards crowd full of spirited Phillies fans.

Beset by back problems, the 41-year-old Thome came off the disabled list this week. He had been just 2 for 20 with 11 strikeouts overall.

Thome is the majors' career leader in interleague home runs. He's spent a lot of time as a DH, and figures to get plenty of chances on the Phillies' nine-game trip to Baltimore, Minnesota and Toronto.

"I've always enjoyed interleague play. It gives you a chance to see different clubs, to go to different places," he said. "It gives you a good chance to see where you are, where you stand with other teams."

Chris Davis and J.J. Hardy homered for the Orioles, who lost for the ninth time in 12 games.

This was interleague ball, purely AL style. Boppers ruled on a night when even ninth-place batters such as Fontenot became dangerous.

The Phillies hit for the cycle, and then some, in the second inning alone - a homer, a triple, three doubles and a single. Philadelphia scored six times, with Fontenot's two-run shot coming right after his foul fly fell beyond Hardy as left fielder Endy Chavez backed off.

By the fourth, it was 9-4 and the teams had already combined for 10 extra-base hits. Victorino had homered, doubled, singled and matched his career high for RBIs by then.

"We came out hitting, right off the bat," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.

A day after Manuel said his slumping team wasn't scaring anyone, his hitters took those words as motivation. Of course, it helped that the Phillies had a designated hitter who really was a DH, rather than a bench guy.

Thome's dribbler past Jake Arrieta (2-8) went for a two-out single in the first inning when shifted second baseman Robert Andino had no chance to make a play from short right field, and set up Victorino's RBI single.

Thome lined a ground-rule double to right-center in the second that let Juan Pierre score the 1,000th run of his career. Thome doubled again in the fourth and scored on Victorino's eighth homer for a 9-3 lead.

Arrieta, the Orioles' opening day starter, lost his sixth straight decision. He was tagged for career highs of nine runs and 11 hits in four innings.

"Going over the game in my head and trying to analyze things. I'm probably overthinking things," he said. "I'm just kind of lost right now.

"To go out in front of 40,000 and having a whole clubhouse counting on you, then to go out there and give it up like that, it's pretty frustrating," he said.

Joe Blanton (5-6) hung around for 6 2-3 innings and gave up five runs, stopping a skid in which he had been pounded while going 0-3 over four starts. He has allowed 11 home runs in his past five outings.

"The way things have been going for me, I'm not even thinking about runs," he said. "I'm just trying to survive."

Jonathan Papelbon pitched the ninth and remained perfect in 16 save chances.

Davis hit an RBI single in the second and Andino added a two-run double. Davis had a leadoff homer in the fourth.

Hardy greeted reliever Michael Schwimmer with a two-out, two-run homer in the seventh.

The crowd of 40,459 was the Orioles' largest since opening day and was boosted by a throng of fans decked out in Phillies garb. With Citizens Bank Park sold out for the last 235 regular-season games, plenty of Philadelphia rooters made the short drive to see their team's first visit to Baltimore since 2006.

When Carlos Ruiz hit an RBI single in the second for a 7-0 lead, there was a collision of sound - the Phillies fans were yelling his nickname of "Chooooch" while the Orioles' backers were simply booing.

"It felt like a good atmosphere," Blanton said.

NOTES: After the game, the Phillies sent LHP Raul Valdes to Triple-A Lehigh Valley and outrighted INF-OF Pete Orr to the same club. Assistant general manager Scott Proefrock said 2B Freddy Galvis has a pars fracture in his back that is "serious." Galvis will get a second opinion next week. This kind of injury could require six weeks in a brace, Proefrock said. ... Phillies 3B Placido Polanco (left wrist tear) got a cortisone shot and says he expects to miss a few more days. ... Baltimore star Adam Jones is in an 0-for-14 rut. ... RHP Tommy Hunter will come up from Triple-A Norfolk to start for Baltimore on Saturday.

10 Movie Robots We Love to Hate

This Friday, Ridley Scott, Damon Lindelof, and these cool floating balls with red lasers that create awesome 3D maps will take you to the heavens in search of our creators in Prometheus.

In the film, as the crew lies in cryogenic stasis for two years, an android named David looks after the ship. As played by Michael Fassbender, he's fastidious, observant, surprisingly blonde, and, maybe, evil. (Spoiler alert! Even after seeing the movie I can't tell you exactly what's up with him.) I can say, however, that it is a remarkable performance and it brings to mind one of sci-fi cinema's great traditions?the evil robot.

Greek lawmaker hits female rival on TV

A politician in Greece is wanted by police for his behavior on a live TV program where he threw a glass of water on a political rival then punched another. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.

By ITV News and Reuters

ATHENS ? The spokesman for Greece's far-right party Golden Dawn threw a glass of water at a female leftist politician and hit another in the face on live television Thursday, causing a political uproar and leading a prosecutor to seek his arrest.

The morning talk show on private television station Antenna was interrupted by the incident and Ilias Kasidiaris was locked in a room at the TV studio but he broke down a door and escaped, the TV host said.

ITV News, which carried a video of the incident, reported that a warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Kasidiaris, who is a member of parliament, is sought for attempting to inflict dangerous bodily harm, which carries a sentence of up to 10 years in jail. However, the sentence can be turned into a fine.

What was a heated debate over the June 17 elections descended into chaos when Kasidiaris threw a glass of water at the female leftist party member, Rena Dourou, calling her a "joke".

A new election is scheduled for June 17, as debate continues over the country's place in the euro zone. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

As other participants watched in stunned silence, Communist party deputy Liana Kanelli intervened on her behalf, throwing a newspaper at Kasidiaris, who called her a "commie", stood up, pushed her and hit her hard in the face.

Golden Dawn won parliamentary seats in May 6 elections, riding a wave of discontent against illegal immigrants in austerity-ridden Greece. The party denies it is neo-Nazi, though its chief Nikos Mihaloliakos delivers Nazi salutes and has denied the Holocaust.

Political rivals were quick to condemn the assault, and some urged Golden Dawn supporters to change their minds before the June 17 vote, which was called as no working majority emerged from the election last month.

Golden Dawn said in a statement on its website that Kasidiaris had been provoked.
