East Coast Grinds To Halt As Superstorm Bears Down

Sand blows on the beach ahead of Hurricane Sandy on Sunday in Atlantic City, N.J.

Hurricane Sandy bore down on the Eastern Seaboard's largest cities Monday, forcing the shutdown of mass transit, schools and financial markets, sending coastal residents fleeing, and threatening a dangerous mix of high winds, soaking rain and a surging wall of water up to 11 feet tall.

Sandy strengthened before dawn and stayed on a predicted path toward Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York ? putting it on a collision course with two other weather systems that would create a superstorm with the potential for havoc over 800 miles from the East Coast to the Great Lakes. About 2 to 3 feet of snow were even forecast for mountainous parts of West Virginia.

The tempest could endanger up to 50 million people for days.

Many workers planned to stay home Monday as subways, buses and trains shut down across the region under the threat of flooding that could inundate tracks and tunnels. Airports also closed, and authorities warned that the time for evacuation was running out or already past. Utilities brought in extra crews, anticipating widespread power failures.

The center of the storm was positioned to come ashore Monday night in New Jersey, meaning the worst of the surge could be in the northern part of that state and in New York City and on Long Island. Higher tides brought by a full moon compounded the threat to the metropolitan area of about 20 million people.

"This is the worst-case scenario," said Louis Uccellini, environmental prediction chief for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

As rain from the leading edges began to fall over the Northeast on Sunday, hundreds of thousands of people from Maryland to Connecticut were ordered to leave low-lying coastal areas, including 375,000 in lower Manhattan and other parts of New York City, 50,000 in Delaware and 30,000 in Atlantic City, N.J., where the city's 12 casinos shut down for only the fourth time ever.

"I think this one's going to do us in," said Mark Palazzolo, who boarded up his bait-and-tackle shop in Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., with the same wood he used in past storms, crossing out the names of Hurricanes Isaac and Irene and spray-painting "Sandy" next to them. "I got a call from a friend of mine from Florida last night who said, 'Mark, get out! If it's not the storm, it'll be the aftermath. People are going to be fighting in the streets over gasoline and food.' "

President Obama declared emergencies in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, authorizing federal relief work to begin well ahead of time. He promised the government would "respond big and respond fast" after the storm hits.

"My message to the governors as well as to the mayors is anything they need, we will be there, and we will cut through red tape," Obama said. "We are not going to get bogged down with a lot of rules."

Authorities warned that New York could get hit with a surge of seawater that could swamp parts of lower Manhattan, flood subway tunnels and cripple the network of electrical and communications lines that are vital to the nation's financial center.

Major U.S. financial markets, including the New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and CME Group in Chicago, planned a rare shutdown Monday. The NYSE closed on Sept. 27, 1985, for Hurricane Gloria. The United Nations also shut down and canceled all meetings at its New York headquarters.

New York called off school Monday for the city's 1.1 million students and announced it would suspend all train, bus and subway service Sunday night. More than 5 million riders a day depend on the transit system.

"If you don't evacuate, you are not only endangering your life, you are also endangering the lives of the first responders who are going in to rescue you," Mayor Michael Bloomberg warned. "This is a serious and dangerous storm."

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was typically blunt: "Don't be stupid. Get out."

Wary of being seen as putting their political pursuits ahead of public safety, Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney reshuffled campaign plans as the storm approached.

In Virginia, one of the most competitive states, election officials eased absentee voting requirements for those affected by the storm. Early voting was canceled Monday in Maryland and the District of Columbia.

Sandy, a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 85 mph early Monday, was blamed for 65 deaths in the Caribbean before it began traveling northward, parallel to the Eastern Seaboard. As of 5 a.m. Monday, it was centered about 385 miles south-southeast of New York City, moving to the north at 15 mph, with hurricane-force winds extending an unusual 175 miles from its center.

Gale-force winds blew overnight over coastal North Carolina, southeastern Virginia, the Delmarva Peninsula and coastal New Jersey.

Sandy was expected to hook inland Monday, colliding with a wintry storm moving in from the west and cold air streaming down from the Arctic, and then cut across into Pennsylvania and travel up through New York state.

Forecasters said the combination could bring close to a foot of rain in places, a potentially lethal storm surge of 4 to 11 feet across much of the region, and punishing winds that could cause widespread power outages that last for days. The storm could also dump up to 2 feet of snow in Kentucky, North Carolina and West Virginia.

Airlines canceled nearly 7,500 flights and Amtrak began suspending train service across the Northeast. New York, Philadelphia, Washington and Baltimore moved to shut down their subways, buses and trains. Those cities shut down their schools, as did Boston. Non-essential government offices closed in the nation's capital.

Pennsylvania's largest utilities brought in hundreds of line and tree-trimming crews in anticipation of several days of power failures or intentional shutdowns in areas with heavy flooding.

In New Jersey, where utilities were widely criticized last year for slow responses after the remnants of storms Irene and Lee, authorities promised a better performance. Bob Hanna, president of the state's Board of Public Utilities, noted that this storm has the potential to threaten even large transmission lines.

Nearly 100 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., a replica of the tall ship made famous in the film Mutiny on the Bounty was taking on water and without propulsion with 17 people aboard, the Coast Guard said. Officials were monitoring the situation early Monday.

On Sunday evening in Rehoboth, Del., only a few cars rolled along Route 1, an artery that is often bumper-to-bumper in summer.

"We were told to get the heck out. I was going to stay, but it's better to be safe than sorry," said Hugh Phillips, who was one of the first in line when a Red Cross shelter opened Sunday afternoon in neighboring Lewes.

Despite the dire warnings, some refused to budge.

Jonas Clark of Manchester Township, N.J. ? right in Sandy's projected path ? stood outside a convenience store, calmly sipping a coffee and wondering why people were working themselves "into a tizzy."

"I've seen a lot of major storms in my time, and there's nothing you can do but take reasonable precautions and ride out things the best you can," said Clark, 73.

The storm threatened to drench areas still recovering from last year's deluges.

In Pompton Lakes, N.J., where record flooding inundated homes a year ago, some residents were already putting belongings out near the curb in advance of the storm.

"They're figuring, divide and conquer," said resident Kevin Gogots. "They'll take the stuff they want to save and put the rest out. Of course, if the street floods again, we'll just have things floating around."

Build Your Brand Through Developing Your Self-Awareness ...

A key component of developing your personal brand is to understand your strengths and weaknesses. It can be difficult to step outside of our self-perceptions and take a critical look at ourselves, but the process of doing so is imperative to increasing our self-awareness and focusing our brand towards areas where we are confident we can be successful.

I teach courses in human relations, with the key aspect of these courses focusing on developing the self-awareness of my students. Throughout the course, students take weekly assessments to cultivate a deeper understanding of their personality, stress type, communication skills, and conflict and decision making styles. What I love about teaching this course is that it results in students having a much deeper awareness of their strengths and weaknesses, enabling them to have more productive relationships.

So how do you begin to develop your self-awareness? A good place to start is to take assessments that will help raise awareness of the various aspects of your natural personality. Below are some of the assessments that I have used ? give them a try and see what you can learn about yourself.

Mindtools (www.mindtools.com) ? is a great site that with many free resources and assessments that will help you better understand your leadership and management styles, decision making effectiveness, and how well you manage stress and your time.

SimilarMinds (www.similarminds.com) ? what this site lacks in explanatory resources, it makes up for in assessment options! This site is a cornucopia of personality assessment including the Jung/Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Enneagram. After you get your results ? just Google them and you?ll find tons of explanations of your type results!

Queendom (www.queendom.com) is a site full of great assessments to help you develop an understanding of your personality and communication skills. They also have lots of career assessments.

Microsoft's biggest gamble yet: risking the name 'Windows'

6 hrs.

Microsoft's come a long way in the last two years. Thursday is the official launch of Windows 8. How PC users respond to the radically redesigned and architected operating system may greatly affect the future of Microsoft. But Microsoft's made a big mistake: they've stretched the Windows brand so thin that it's going to confuse customers?--?and maybe even drive them away.

It's not news to Microsoft how important Windows 8 is to the company,?as well as its sister operating system Windows RT that powers the first Microsoft Surface tablet. This is the last chance Microsoft has to get into the race beside Apple and Google for the future of mobile?--?and perhaps desktop?--?computing. But even though Windows 8 was officially announced only?16 months ago, looking at how the tech community ?responded to it at the time reminds how audacious?--?and in hindsight, how essential?--?Microsoft's Windows 8 strategy has become.

Although there was a casual mention of Windows 8 and its ability to run on the ARM-based processors?--?the same sort that power iPhones and mobile tablet?s--?at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show, the first official look at Windows 8 came at the D9 conference on June 1st, 2011. All Things D's Ina Fried had an exclusive first look and interview with Windows President Steven Sinofsky, who is quoted right out of the gate saying, ?[Windows 8] is ?no compromise? and that?s really important to us."

But there was a compromise to come: Windows 8 doesn't actually run on ARM processors; instead, that's what Windows RT is for. The new "Windows Store" apps?--?think of them like iPad or Android tablet apps?--?run on both Windows 8 and Windows RT devices. But traditional?--?some might say "real"?--?Windows apps like Photoshop or Minecraft will only run on Windows 8 machines that use an x86 chip. (At least until their developers create dual-Windows versions, something Microsoft obviously hopes will become more common.)

There are also native Windows RT apps that just run on RT, just to make it more confusing.

At the time, it was also presumed that Windows Store apps would be more like simple web widgets. Wrote Fried:

The other type of application, which has to be written in HTML5 and Javascript, looks more like a mobile application, filling the full screen. Internet Explorer 10, which is part of Windows 8, has already been configured to run in this mode, as have several widget-like apps for checking stock prices and weather.

Those widgets ended up being quite a bit more like traditional Windows applications, developed in a variety of languages. ) And Windows Store apps for Windows 8 can run on Windows RT as well...sometimes. (To speak nerdy, developers can choose to compile for ARM, but it's not required.)

What becomes apparent when looking through the coverage of Windows 8 from a year-and-a-half, though, is that at the time Microsoft thought it would be able to make a single version of its operating system that would work for desktops, laptops, and tablets alike. (Funnily enough, at the time, Microsoft was calling "Windows 8" a working title; it wouldn't officially name the product until 2012.)

What's clear is this: Windows 8 started as something easy to understand, a unified operating system that would run on all types of hardware. Along the way, Microsoft realized they'd bitten off more than they could chew, split off Windows RT from Windows 8, and sowed a lot of confusion that's going to get worse before it gets better.

What's disappointing in all of this is that Windows 8?--?the full-blown version?--?has been getting mostly high praise from those who have used its many preview builds. ?Tim Anderson, writing for the Guardian, called a summer build proof that Microsoft could have "turned on a pin and transformed its client and consumer operating system from one that is hopelessly bogged down in legacy and unsuited for modern mobile computing, to one that is beautifully engineered for the next generation of cloud-connected devices."?

(Broadly, anyone using Windows 8 on a touchscreen device loves it, while those using a ?keyboard and mouse tend to be of mixed minds.)

But for the first time since Windows NT (which wasn't a consumer-facing version of Windows), Microsoft has been sloppy with its most precious brand.?And that's just at the highest level; inside the operating system and on the web, Microsoft has a supercilious tendency to slap the "Windows" name on everything from DropBox clones ("Windows Live Mesh") to file browsers ("Windows Explorer," not to be confused with "Internet Explorer," Windows' default web browser).

It's a mess. It's confusing. And it's ultimately going to be a big factor in confusion and dissatisfaction for a lot of customers over the coming months. (Especially when you consider there will be another Microsoft Surface tablet coming soon that does run the full-blown Windows 8.)

Yet a quick look at recent history makes one thing clear: Microsoft is making it up as they go along. And that might not be good enough anymore.

Open webOS-powered HDTVs said to be on the way from... LG?

If you were wondering what was next for webOS now that it's gone all open source on us, webOS Nation chimes in with word that Gram is working with LG to bring it to connected HDTVs. Several names from the HP / Gram team are dropped as being involved in the effort, which reportedly was under way even before HP revealed it would spin the project off as an independent. Of course, when we actually saw Open webOS 1.0 it was already stretching to fill the space of an HP TouchSmart computer screen (project architect Steve Winston specifically mentioned hotel kiosks as a possibility, a market LG is all over) so it makes sense that larger displays have been a target. With LG supposedly both looking to replace its existing NetCast smart TV platform and unhappy with Google TV based on its rate of adoption and Google's terms, engineers have been working to port the software to its dual-core L9 chipset. In the past LG has pursued voice and motion control, the aforementioned Google TV integration and even Plex support to make its smart TVs more appealing, and has founded the Smart TV Alliance for cross platform apps. We only have to wait until CES 2013 to see if webOS is next up to power its efforts, stay tuned.

Mental Health, Depression And Positive Mental Health Habits

Your rating: None Average: 5 (1 vote)

Since October is the Mental Health Awareness month I would like to join the cause and spread the word about problems related to mental health. But first things first. What is it all about and why it is important for everyone to maintain good mental health? When people are in a condition of good mental health they are capable to work, study, and engage in various activities without any difficulty in particular. However when they have a mental disorder it becomes reflected in their behaviour, emotions and ability to perform well in different task related to work, school or at home.

Many are the reasons for a mental disorder to occur. Unlike most diseases it is not something you ?catch?, like catching the flu or something else. Rather, mental disorders are a complex result of combination of factors - genes, environment, emotional state, and other outside factors such as stress, grief or loss, abuse, etc. This, however doesn?t mean that the majority of disorders cannot be cured. Quite the opposite - when a mental disorder is identified, the sooner that happens, the easier it becomes to "heal" the mind.

The problem with the majority of disorders is that, they are difficult to identify. It all happens in a person?s mind. Not always the emotions and the feelings are enough to tell and sometimes people inhibit them so well, that it becomes impossible to tell if their condition is harmful to themselves or not. One such condition is depression.

Depression

For years, there was a common belief that depressed individuals are weak and responsible for their condition. Like they have brought it on themselves and they are to blame. When in fact, research shows that this is not the case. Everyone can have an episode of major depression throughout their life and statistics show that depression affects more than 121 million people globally. Depression and anxiety are considered as some of the most serious disorders for one simple reason - because they are quite often misunderstood by the general population. Many people don?t even know they have depression, not to mention that they don?t do anything to treat it.

A huge amount of the population wakes up everyday feeling down already and goes on to complete their daily tasks and chores not even knowing why they feel so unhappy and unproductive. This is extremely serious as a huge amount of the people suffering from depression go on to committing suicide. Actually 1 million lives are lost EVERY YEAR to suicide globally. For this reason the purpose of the Mental Health Awareness Month is to eliminate the stigma and all the myths around depression and to promote good mental health habits.

Unfortunately, the literature on depression is so broad, that it is very difficult to summarize in one article. In the second part I will give some tips on how to maintain positive mental health habits and to avoid depressive episodes, so stay tuned.

Unified Communications on Virtual Servers / Communications ...

Hallbergmoos, Germany -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/25/2012 -- As of now, Unified Communications solutions (UC) of ANDTEK GmbH can now also run with the Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) on virtual servers. This is the result of a cooperation between ANDTEK and the virtualization specialists, VMware, on the one hand, and of ANDTEK?s UCS certification by Cisco, on the other. Virtualization enables companies are able to bundle IT resources and thus to execute UC applications in a more flexible manner, use the capacities of the physical server significantly more efficiently and save up to 70 percent of the overall IT costs.

All Unified Communications solutions of ANDTEK GmbH, a Unified Communications (UC) specialist, can now be virtually displayed and operated on the basis of the Unified Computing System (UCS) data center platform by Cisco. This means that companies can use the UC solutions of ANDTEK worldwide and irrespective of their location.

Virtualization is provided by the "vSphere" software of VMware. This software of the market leader in virtualization enables the virtual servers em?bedded in the Cisco UCS servers to execute the industry-wide communication solutions of ANDTEK for a wide range of applications (such as call centers, voice recording, computer telephony integration, attendant consoles).

Many thousand businesses are already taking advantage of the opportunity to run their applications on virtual servers, which are at the same time and independently integrated into a single physical server.

This helps companies to save costs, e.g. for hardware, cooling, floor space, energy, and above all, for maintenance. Maintenance of the (physical) IT infrastructure accounts for up to 70 percent of the IT budget. Virtual servers relieve IT administrators of complex, time-consuming management tasks. Virtual solutions offer, in addition to cost saving, benefits such as the higher level of availability and flexibility compared to physical servers, which are often only utilized to a small percentage. Peaks can be balanced optimally, since resources are allocated to the users according to need, thus making it possible to make optimal use of the available capacity.

With the help of the virtualization, the UC solutions ANDTEK can be used entirely independent of the OS, since each operating system is not only installed on the virtual servers but also has access to the required resources at all times. "In this way, it is not only possible to integrate additional communication services quickly and easily, but also to flexibly adapt them at any time to increasing demands," says ANDTEK?s CEO Roland Russwurm.
