Alabama school bus shooting suspect holing up in bunker: police

MOBILE, Alabama (Reuters) - A standoff continued on Wednesday with a gunman who boarded an Alabama school bus and fatally shot the driver before fleeing with a young child and holing up in an underground bunker, authorities said.

Bus driver Charles Albert Poland Jr., 66, was killed in the shooting Tuesday afternoon as he ferried children home from school, the Dale County Sheriff's Department said.

The gunman fled to a bunker on his property after the shooting, Alabama media reported.

Dale County Coroner Woodrow Hilboldt said it was his understanding that the child, variously identified by local media as 5 or 6 years old, was barricaded with the gunman in "some kind of a tornado bunker."

Local law enforcement gave scant details about the incident, but confirmed Poland's death and said a child was present at the scene in Midland City.

Hilboldt said the gunman, whom officials have not named, is also in his 60s.

Law enforcement officials from multiple agencies were convened near the bunker on Wednesday as the standoff with the shooter continued overnight, said Dothan Police Sergeant Rachel David.

"At this time, law enforcement has extended the evacuation area to ensure the safety of those living in the immediate area," David said in a statement.

The shooting comes as national debate rages over gun violence, especially in schools, after a gunman shot dead 20 students and six staff members at a Connecticut elementary school last month.

Alabama media reported that the incident on Tuesday happened at approximately 4 p.m. local time when the suspect demanded the driver let a student off the bus.

When Poland refused, the man boarded the bus, then shot the driver before taking the child and fleeing the scene. It was unclear whether the gunman had any relationship with the child.

"I spoke to about three or four of the students," Michael Senn, a local minister whose church is near the scene, told Alabama NBC affiliate WSFA.

"One of them was a young lady and she told me that when the man entered the bus ... he told most of them to get off the bus and he grabbed a 5-year-old little boy," Senn said.

"From what I understand, kids were running down the road behind the church trying to get to safety."

One resident of the area who arrived quickly on the scene said he tried to chase the suspect before he realized that the gunman had taken cover in his own private bunker.

The sheriff's department said multiple agencies were assisting with the incident, and local schools would be closed on Wednesday.

Is Unlocking Your Phone Really Illegal?

Legal protection for people who unlock their mobile phones to use them on other networks expired last weekend. According to the claims of major U.S. wireless carriers, unlocking a phone bought after January 26 without your carrier's permission violates the Digital Millennium Copyright Act ("DMCA") whether the phone is under contract or not. In a way, this is not as bad as it sounds. In other ways, it's even worse. More »

TaxACT Deluxe Online

By Kathy Yakal

2nd Story Software has had the distinction over the last several years of being the only personal income tax-prep provider that offers a free version that is the same as its paid version in terms of actual tax preparation tools. The free version of TaxACT Deluxe Online only lacks some found extras found in the paid version, such as an import tool, donation tracker, and calculators (none of which I even used in my evaluation). But if you don't need to file a state return, you can prepare and print or e-file your IRS 1040 forms and schedules absolutely free.

It's for this reason that I said last year and will say again this year: The TaxACT site should be your first stop when you're getting ready to endure your annual tax ordeal. Jump to the topics that you think are the most complex in your return and see how the site handles them. If the forms you need are supported?TaxACT includes all of the most common and many that are used less frequently?and the depth of guidance is acceptable, you don't have to look any further.

Lest you think this is a gimmick designed to market a lot of other products and services to you, or that TaxACT is a second-rate site published by a fly-by-night company, know that it's neither. TaxACT has been around for as long as its competitors, though in its earlier years it was known as Personal TaxEdge and published by a different company (some of the principals moved forward with the product and kept it going under a new name). There's no catch. TaxACT Deluxe Online is a solid rival for the other sites reviewed here. It just happens to be free.

Almost a Carbon Copy
Like its competitors, TaxACT looks and works much like the 2011 version did, with one big difference: TaxTutor Guidance, which comes from renowned tax resource J.K. Lasser, has been rewritten to be clearer and simpler. This was one of TaxACT's weaknesses, so the change was welcome. Beyond that, the company is now offering an audit insurance plan ? similar to competitors' ? for $39.95. And 2nd Story Software is branching out a bit; it will produce an inexpensive service for creating your own will.

TaxACT Deluxe Online does practically everything TurboTax Deluxe Online?and H&R Block At Home Deluxe Online?do. Besides supporting a comparable number of forms and schedules and incorporating new tax laws since last year, it walks you through an interview-like process ("Q&A") rather than making you enter data on IRS documents. It asks you simple, clear questions about everything that needs to be on those official forms. There are often several questions on each screen, and you simply enter information in fields or select options from lists or check boxes to answer them.

You advance forward and backward by clicking buttons. TaxACT doesn't force you to complete the screens in order like H&R Block At Home Deluxe Online does. And when you come across particularly complex topics, all of these sites offer the option of taking a more directed, simplified route.

In the background, TaxACT transfers those responses to the correct lines on the 1040 and its assorted forms and schedules. When you're done, TaxACT combs through your return and alerts you to anything that's missing or seems incorrect. After you've fixed anything necessary, what comes out when you click "Print" is the actual IRS forms filled out with the information you provided. You can also file your return electronically at no cost.

10 Steps for Small Businesses to Produce Killer Video Content ...

Image

Video is a great addition to virtually any content mix. It?s highly engaging, a great way to humanize your brand, and can provide incredible value to your consumers, to list just a few benefits.

But for small businesses, producing video content can be challenging for several reasons.

Hiring a production house is expensive.

Self-shot video can lack the quality and polish of professional video.

A lack of experience makes the thought of producing video content nerve-racking.

All of these reasons are valid, but none should deter you from producing what could be amazing video content.?So, how can you produce killer video content for your small business?

Here are 10 steps to get you started:

1. Dive in

Arguably, this is the most important tip I have to share. Just dive in and commit to producing video as part of your content mix. If you?ve never produced a video before, this will be the biggest barrier.

2. Figure out how you can add value for your consumers with video

Probably the worst thing you can do is not having a plan for how you can add value for your consumers with your video. You?ll need to educate, entertain, or provide utility for your viewers, so before you get going, figure out what your approach is going to be and what the basic subject matter of your video will be.

3. Script what it is that you want to convey

To ensure your video tells a cohesive story and adds value in the way that you?ve planned, do yourself a favour and write a script.?If you?ve never written a script, not to worry.

An easy format to follow will be to create a document with two columns and write your dialogue or audio in the left hand column, with corresponding video in the right hand column. This format will allow you to map out what the finished video should sound?and?look like.

4. Get your equipment in check

Chances are that you already have a few equipment options for shooting a video in your possession. Virtually all digital cameras have a video recording function, most smartphones are recording video in HD these days, and a huge number of computers are equipped with webcams. Each device has its own pros and cons, but which is the best choice for your early videos is up to you, though they?ll all probably do the trick.

5. Determine where and when to shoot

This can be really important. If your video requires shooting on location, then you?re set. If your video is an educational piece that could be shot anywhere, choose a location that is well lit and quiet with little to no ambient noise so as to not interfere with your audio. It?s pretty bad when a video that relies heavily on audio can?t be heard.

6. Set up your camera

A tripod can be your best friend. If you don?t have a tripod and you?re just getting into shooting video, try setting your camera up in a stationary location so it doesn?t shake around, which can result in jittery video that?s difficult to watch. Desks, shelves, tables, stools, and ledges are everywhere ? take advantage of them.

7. Test shoot, review and optimize

If you haven?t shot video before, or are using new equipment, you?ll want to consider shooting a short segment and reviewing the resulting footage before filming your entire video.

Take a few minutes to check your footage to ensure everything looks great, the framing is as you envisioned, and that your audio is crisp and clear. If any adjustments are required, you?ll be thanking me that you made them after reviewing a short segment of footage rather than when you?ve invested more significant time to complete your entire shoot.

8. Hit record and go for it

No need to look back now. Just hit record and go for it. Anyone appearing in your video should be comfortable and confident with all of the planning and preparation that has gone into this, so there?s no reason for them to be anything but. Not only will being confident make your shoot go more smoothly, but it will be picked up on in your final video and result in a better "performance."

9. Review and edit

When your shoot has wrapped, review your footage to ensure you?ve captured everything required and begin editing. Even if your entire video was shot in a singe take, there are some basic things you?ll want to edit. For instance, cut dead footage at the beginning and end of your video so that when your consumers press play, your video gets right to it. You might also want to optimize your audio levels, add a title, or include a call-to-action that will work toward your objectives.

10. Publish

This is the best part: you get to share the fruit of your labours with your consumers. Publish your video to the social media networks that your community is actively engaging on ? YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, Facebook, Google+, and on.

If you have any tips for how small businesses can produce great video content, or you?re doing it yourself, tell me all about it in the comments, or on Twitter?@RGBSocial.

Harry's Afghan downtime: movies, candy trades

LONDON (AP) ? Prince Harry's off-duty time in Afghanistan appeared to be full of war movies, board games and elaborate candy trades.

The 28-year-old helicopter pilot and fellow members of his squad swapped Kit Kats and Rice Krispies Squares for American soldiers' M&Ms, according to a British media pool report released Sunday.

Harry himself outlined one of his less-prestigious duties. The third-in-line to the U.K. throne said anyone who lost at Uckers ? a military game similar to Ludo or Parcheesi ? had to then wait on his comrades like a Buckingham Palace butler, ready with a fresh cup of tea whenever anyone rang their bell.

"Whoever loses ... then you have to make brews for everybody all day," Harry told journalists ahead of his return to Britain this week.

He also denied rumors that he was far better at PlayStation than at traditional board games.

"I don't know who told you that," he told reporters. "I lost two days ago, and yesterday, so since you guys have been here I've only lost."

Harry returned to Britain on Wednesday after a 20-week deployment in Afghanistan in which he acknowledged that he had targeted Taliban fighters from the cockpit of his Apache attack helicopter.

Asked in an earlier round of interviews whether he had killed anyone, Harry said: "Yeah, so, lots of people have." That admission disturbed some Britons and led to front-page headlines like the one in The Daily Mail that read: "Harry: I Have Killed."

This latest round of interviews, focusing on Harry's daily life at Britain's Camp Bastion military base in Afghanistan, is not likely to draw the same kind of headlines.

The report mainly carried glimpses of the prince's daily routine, including his favorite foods ? chicken and broccoli ? and his favorite movies ? "Full Metal Jacket," ''Apocalypse Now," and "Platoon."

In an interesting twist for an Apache pilot, "Black Hawk Down," the Ridley Scott film about a helicopter raid gone wrong in Somalia, was among the movies spotted in Harry's communal tent.

Despite falls, Wagner edges Gold for 2nd US title

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Flawed, but still first.

Ashley Wagner became the first woman since Michelle Kwan in 2005 to win back-to-back titles in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, managing to hold off up-and-comer Gracie Gold despite three major mistakes Saturday night.

Wagner was subdued as she waited for her marks, surely thinking she'd blown her chance to repeat. When her score was announced and she saw she was still in first, a look of shock crossed her face.

Wagner finished with 188.84 points, about two ahead of Gold. Gold won the free skate ? posting the second-highest score ever at the U.S. meet, no less. But the 17-year-old had too much ground to make up after a dismal performance Thursday night in the short program left her in ninth place, more than 13 points behind Wagner.

Earlier Saturday, Olympic silver medalists and 2011 world champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White won their fifth straight dance title, matching a U.S. record. Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir won the pairs title.

There is something about defending the title that brings out the worst in the American women. Since 1990, Kwan is the only other woman to win consecutive titles (granted, she did win eight straight). Six women have won the last seven crowns, and the reigning champion has almost always had a total meltdown. Rachael Flatt is the only defending champ who even managed to stay on the podium the next year.

Wagner, though, seems to be made of different stuff. She's been rock solid since moving to California to train with John Nicks in the summer of 2011. She won the U.S. title last year, had the best finish by an American at worlds since 2007 and won the silver medal last month in the Grand Prix final.

And she sure looked loose as she came out from the dressing rooms, clapping along with the crowd to Agnes Zawadzki's "Rhapsody in Blue" music. Her opening triple flip-double toe loop-double toe combination was gorgeous, drawing oohs and aahs from the crowd. She also did a triple loop in and out of a spread eagle ? incredibly difficult.

But she didn't have her usual fire, almost as if she was skating not to lose rather than skating to win. And then came the falls. She was off-balance in the air on the lutz, and couldn't right herself in time to save it. With the triple loop only seconds later, she didn't have time to regroup. She pulled herself together only to two-foot her last jump, the triple flip.

At 21, Wagner is a far more complete skater than Gold, and that's what made the difference. Skating to "Samson and Delilah," Wagner told a story while Gold just skated and jumped.

With blonde good looks and a made-for-the Olympics name, Gold has all the makings of that "next big thing" the United States has been craving. That she can skate only fueled the hype, and some were ready to put her on the Sochi medals stand after she won the U.S. junior title last year and finished second in the junior world championships.

But she's been wildly inconsistent this year, winning the silver medal at Cup of Russia after falling apart at Skate Canada. After botching her short program Thursday, she needed a dazzling performance just to have a chance at one of the spots on the world championships team. She came through, posting a 132.49 that was the second-highest score for a free skate at nationals. Sasha Cohen scored 134.03 in 2006, the year she won her only U.S. title.

"I stopped focusing on what was around me ? the crowd, the screaming, the other skaters, the pressure, the expectations. I let it all go," Gold said. "I just pictured myself at my rink in Chicago and even the practices here ? how I would skate if I was practicing. Just the feel of the knees, the feel of the ice, one thing at a time.

"I didn't get over my head with thoughts or expectations. I just went out there and skated like I know how to skate."

Gold's jumps are fabulous, easily the best of the entire field. Maybe the whole world. They're done with power, and her combinations are so smooth she looks like a stone skipping across the water. She did seven triples, and even Kim Yu-na would be impressed with her triple lutz-triple toe loop combination.

But skating is both sport and art, and Gold is going to have to add some substance between the jumps if she wants the prize to match her name. Her footwork was basic and most of her spins were adequate, and she didn't display that passion that makes a good program great.

Comprehensive immigration plan coming this week: McCain

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Leading Democratic and Republican senators said on Sunday there were encouraging signs in the push to overhaul U.S. immigration laws - a top priority for President Obama's second term - and they would introduce their plan this week.

With Obama set to begin his push for immigration reform with a speech in Las Vegas on Tuesday, a group of three Democratic and three Republican senators have been working for weeks on a plan.

One of those senators, Republican John McCain of the border state of Arizona, said on ABC's "This Week" program that the group still had hard work ahead but that he was pleased with the progress and that the principles of a comprehensive plan would be put forth this week.

McCain said the plan was much like a 2007 immigration proposal that died during the presidency of George W. Bush. That plan included a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, tighter borders, a guest worker program and requirements for employers to verify workers' immigration status.

The immigration issue was largely pushed aside during Obama's first term as economic concerns weighed more heavily, but the president, who had overwhelming backing from Hispanic voters in his 2012 re-election, cited it as part of his agenda when sworn in for a second term last week.

McCain said the political aspect of immigration reform should sway any Republicans who object to a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.

"We are losing dramatically the Hispanic vote, which we think should be ours, for a variety of reasons, and we've got to understand that," he said.

McCain said change also was needed because "we can't go on forever with 11 million people living in this country in the shadows in an illegal status. We cannot forever have children who were born here, who were brought here by their parents when they were small children, to live in the shadows, as well."

Democrat Dick Durbin of Illinois, another member of the six-person Senate group, said on "Fox News Sunday" that work remained to be done but that the progress was encouraging.

"We are trying work our way through some very difficult issues but we are committed to a comprehensive approach to finally in this country having an immigration law that we can live with," he said. "We have virtually been going for maybe 25 years without a clear statement about immigration policy. That's unacceptable in this nation of immigrants."

Senator Robert Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey who is also a member of the immigration group, said on "This Week" that he was cautiously optimistic because of the bipartisan spirit that has prevailed in the recent reform effort.

"I see things that were once off the table for agreement and discussion being on the table with a serious pathway forward," he said.

Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee, a Republican who is not a member of the group, said he had spoken with one of its members, who said he was "very optimistic" about reform.

McCain: Immigration plan to have pathway to citizenship

Two senators at the center of negotiations over comprehensive immigration reform, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) said on Sunday that a pathway to citizenship is an essential component of a comprehensive reform bill.

"That has to be also part of it," McCain told ABC News' Martha Raddatz on "This Week" when asked whether a pathway to citizenship would be a component of reform. "There's a new appreciation on both sides of the aisle including, maybe more importantly on the Republican side of the aisle, that we have to enact comprehensive immigration reform."

Like "This Week" on Facebook here. You can also follow the show on Twitter here.

McCain said that a small group of Senators will release the principles of a comprehensive, not "piecemeal," reform bill this week.

"I'm very pleased with the progress," McCain said. "It's not that much different from what we tried to do in 2007."

Read a full transcript of the interview with Sens. McCain and Menendez HERE.

Menendez, who met with President Obama on Friday along with other members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus leadership, said that the president expressed his full commitment to reform.

"The president made it very clear in that discussion that this was a top legislative priority for him in this session of the Congress and that he expects to work with all of us in an effort to achieve that goal and he's fully committed to it."

He added that a pathway to "earned legalization" is an "essential element" of an immigration reform bill.

"First, Americans support it in poll after poll. Secondly, Latino voters expect it. Thirdly Democrats want it. And fourth Republicans need it," Menendez said.

McCain added that he believes Obama's use of the presidential podium on behalf of immigration reform at an event in Las Vegas planned for Tuesday will aid efforts to pass a bill.

"I think it helps," McCain said. "I think its important that we all work together on this."

"Believe it or not, I see a glimmer of bipartisanship out there," he added.

What is it? Social Cells

Dictyostelium discoideum, social cells, amoeba, slug, D. discoideum Social cells: The slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum spends much of its time as an apparently typical microscopic single-celled amoeba, oozing around in wet soil as it grazes on bacteria. Something truly odd happens, however, when the food runs out. Starving D. discoideum band together to form a conglomerate organism. A multicellular slug of sorts, the group grows into a spore-making tower, a beacon for sending amoebae out to richer grounds. The sudden lifestyle change is interesting enough, but the real evolutionary puzzle is the cells that make up the delicate stalk. They die without reproducing, which means cells at the top of the tower can turn into more effective spores. This form of altruistic sacrifice has fascinated biologists for decades. (It appears that related amoebae are more likely to group together, so even the dying cells get to pass on their genes.) Here is an organism that is both solitary and fully, suicidally social, a nearly perfect model creature for understanding how multicellular life emerged from the amoebae. In this shot, a slice through a culture dish, you can see a progression of slugs into towers.

Davis-White post career-best score in short dance

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Meryl Davis and Charlie White topped the only competition they have in the United States.

Themselves.

The Olympic silver medalists and 2011 world champions scored a career-high 79.02 points in the short dance Friday in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, topping the 76.17 they scored at the 2011 Grand Prix final as well as their 76.89 from last year's U.S. meet. The International Skating Union only recognizes scores from its events as official records.

With more than an eight-point lead over Madison Chock and Evan Bates (70.8), Davis and White are all but assured of winning a record-tying fifth U.S. dance title Saturday as long as they show up. Four other couples also have won five titles, most recently Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto.

"There are a lot of reasons to stay motivated," Davis said. "We feel we're making huge strides in what we're putting out on the ice. What better place than your national championships to show that?"

The only couple close to Davis and White is Canada's Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, and their rivalry is the best thing going in dance these days. Virtue and Moir won the Olympic title as well as the world crowns in 2010 and 2012 while the Americans won worlds in 2011 and beat the Canadians last month in the Grand Prix final.

Oh, they train together in suburban Detroit, too.

Here in the States, though, no one comes close to Davis and White's exquisite performances. The short dance can be a mind-numbing event, with all of the skaters required to perform the same dances ? this year it's the Yankee polka and the waltz ? during their 2:50 routine. Watch one or two teams, and it all becomes a blur.

But Davis and White not only make it fresh, they make it entertaining.

The speed and ease with which they skated was breathtaking, as if their blades were talking to the ice. Their twizzles ? traveling spins ? were done in perfect unison. Doing one would be impressive enough ? think rubbing your stomach while patting your head, and you get the idea ? but they did five and then another four, never losing their stride, connection to the music or their connection to each other. And when they began their polka with a series of hops, you half-expected an oompah band to stroll out of the Zamboni garage.

They were so good, the audience was on its feet, the first standing ovation of the competition.

Diane O'Meara, Woman In Manti Te'o Girlfriend Pictures, Says Ronaiah Tuiasosopo Confessed

LOS ANGELES ? The woman who was unknowingly the face of Lennay Kekua said the man who concocted the hoax confessed to her and said he wanted to end the ruse that snared Notre Dame star Manti Te'o many times before it unraveled.

Diane O'Meara is the woman whose pictures were used to make an online profile of Kekua, the fake person who Te'o said he fell for without meeting in person. O'Meara said Ronaiah Tuiasosopo told her that he created the hoax and wanted to end it before Kekua "died" in September, but Te'o wanted the relationship with Kekua to continue.

O'Meara spoke with The Associated Press by phone Thursday from New York with her attorneys in the room. O'Meara said Tuiasosopo confessed in a 45-minute phone call Jan. 14 that he'd "stalked" her Facebook profile for five years and stolen photos to create Kekua.

The 23-year-old O'Meara, of Long Beach, said when Tuiasosopo sent her a Facebook message Dec. 16, it was the first time he'd contacted her since high school.

It was also 10 days after Te'o said he received a call from the person pretending to be Kekua, saying she was alive after all.

O'Meara said Tuiasosopo called and told her about a serious car accident that left his cousin with major brain damage. He asked her for a photo with her holding up a sign reading "MSMK" ? which Te'o says were the initials Kekua went by ? and the date. Tuiasosopo said the idea was to cheer up his cousin on his birthday because he was facing surgery. O'Meara agreed.

Te'o provided a photo to Katie Couric that seems to be the shot O'Meara sent to Tuiasosopo. It was shown during Te'o's interview with Couric that was broadcast Thursday.

In early January, Tuiasosopo contacted O'Meara again to request more photos and a video of O'Meara saying "good luck on the 7th." Tuiasosopo told her his cousin's brain surgery had been pushed back. On Jan. 6, he texted her "Hey diane, just wanted to thank you again for your prayers & support. Tomorrow is the big day & we are being as positive as we can be!"

Jan. 7 was the date of the BCS national championship between Notre Dame and Alabama. O'Meara learned her identity had been used by Tuiasosopo to create Kekua when a Deadspin.com reporter contacted her last week and Tuiasosopo confessed.

O'Meara said she feels "violated" and "exposed" by what happened. Her attorney Jim Artiano said he is evaluating the situation and has not decided on whether to take any legal action.

Third Carbon backup beta drops with Google Play release imminent

Carbon Backup

A third (and probably final) beta release of Koush's Carbon backup app was let loose this morning, adding support for the Box cloud service, notifications, a cancel option and other features and fixes. Also new is a accompanying Windows desktop app that will let you backup and restore an unrooted device.

Koush, in his Google+ post, says the beta should stop working on Jan. 30, by which time we should see the app in Google Play, with free and premium versions.

Dell's Project Ophelia: Carry Your Computer in your Pocket ...

Dell wants to replace your desktop and laptop computers. The company has introduced a new computer that looks like a USB memory stick (also known as a flash drive).

Ophelia uses a Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) to draw power to boot from an HDTV display, or it can be powered off a USB port. It has integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capability for connecting to a keyboard, a mouse, and the network, and it runs the Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) operating system with all of the functionality of a tablet. It can also be used to power virtual instances of other desktop operating systems on a remote server or in the cloud.

Dell_ophelia

You can see the Ophelia device in the above picture. It looks like a flash drive. The glasses are included simply to give a comparison showing the small size of the computer.

The following announcement was written by Dell:

LAS VEGAS ? Dell today unveiled a solution that extends the value of cloud client computing to the next level, enabling people to manage the increasing convergence of their work lives and personal lives by using a compact, portable device to access not only secured professional assets, but also personal content via the cloud. The ultra-compact multimedia-capable device, called Dell Wyse "Project Ophelia," is slightly larger than a USB memory stick and enables users to convert any capable TV or monitor into a functioning interactive personal display device without using a computer, tablet or smartphone.

Today, people are increasingly looking to take and securely access their personal and professional content wherever they go. Despite rapid advances in mobile technology, however, they still face challenges when it comes to securely accessing desired information when they are away from the office. There is no easy way, for example, to access photos, music or video from a personal cloud or entertainment subscription when away from a PC, smartphone or tablet. Equally, professionals find it difficult to securely access and share work applications, presentations and content if they are away from their usual devices, or worse, if their mobile devices are misplaced or fail during travel. It is also difficult for IT organizations to enable and manage access to enterprise apps and content for highly mobile users, especially those who may be without their preferred laptop, tablet or smartphone.

Built on Dell Wyse software technology already used on millions of devices, Project Ophelia transforms ordinary displays into a window to entertainment, communications and a person's own personal cloud. The device also allows business users to instantly turn a display into a flexible, securely managed, communications-enabled thin client for work, demos or presentations. These capabilities are packed into a device barely larger than a USB stick that is self-powered through a monitor and easily fits inside your pocket. The product addresses a variety of uses being fueled by the growing need to access cloud-based apps and resources at any time, or whenever a larger screen high definition digital display provides a superb user experience. Examples include:

  • Consumers who desire in-the-moment access to cloud-based games or content but do not have their laptop or tablet in their possession;
  • On-line gamers wishing to take advantage of a much larger display for an improved interactive experience;
  • Highly mobile professionals who may not have a large display capable device with them; and
  • Cloud access providers wishing to provide an attractively priced device included with carrier internet/wireless services
Key benefits of Project Ophelia:
  • Enables instant and secure access to your personal cloud, entertainment, work content and applications wherever there is an available capable display (using a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse), including a wide variety of Dell flat-panel displays.
  • Integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth facilitates access and communication.
  • Built on the Android 4 OS to support Web browsing, social networking, media playback and Android Apps with a possibility to extend to other services.
  • Securely connects to Windows desktops and applications running on back-end systems from all leading infrastructure providers including Citrix, Microsoft and VMware.
  • Flexibly powered zero-battery device gets power from the attached display monitor via its MHL interface to the monitor's MHL port, or separately via its own USB interface. No batteries to charge or change.
  • Remembers settings for each individual to enhance usability.
  • Compatible with many existing Dell Wyse thin clients and software products.
  • Managed by Dell Wyse Cloud Client Manager software-as-a-service (SaaS) which can ensure the device is being used by the appropriate person with the right permissions and access to apps and content based on role, department, and location.
Mobile devices have small screens, tablets and PCs aren't always convenient to haul around, and all these devices require batteries that can run down. 'Project Ophelia' turns capable TVs and monitors into personal and reliable Wi-Fi enabled work or entertainment stations ? all managed easily by IT via Dell Wyse Cloud Client Manager.

Availability:
Project Ophelia will be available in the first half of 2013 from Dell Cloud Client Computing.

Democratic support for Hagel grows

(AP) ? Democratic support for Chuck Hagel's nomination for defense secretary grew on Thursday as the former Republican senator allayed concerns about his past statements on Israel and Iran.

Sens. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Chris Coons of Delaware and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire said they met with Hagel this week and were reassured by his commitment to Israel's security.

Hagel would replace Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, who is stepping down. Despite early misgivings, about a dozen Democrats have announced they would vote for his nomination, and none has declared opposition to President Barack Obama's choice.

Six Republicans have said they would vote against Hagel, with some stating their opposition before Obama announced his pick on Jan. 7.

"Senator Hagel clarified his position on Iran sanctions and Israel, and I am confident he is firmly committed to ensuring a strong U.S.-Israel relationship," Lautenberg said, adding that he and his colleagues will be watching closely "to ensure that issues of concern do not emerge as he takes on this critical position."

Separately, 13 former secretaries of defense and state as well as national security advisers sent a letter to members of the Senate strongly endorsing Hagel. Among them was former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who has worked for Republican and Democratic administrations, and George Schultz and Brent Scowcroft, veterans of GOP administrations.

"For those of us honored to have served as members of a president's national security team, Sen. Hagel clearly understands the essence and the burdens of leadership required of this high office," the former officials wrote.

Hagel, who served two terms as Nebraska senator, has faced opposition from GOP-leaning outside groups over his past statements about the power of the "Jewish lobby" of pro-Israel groups and his doubts about the effectiveness of unilateral sanctions on Iran.

Not one GOP lawmaker has endorsed the nominee. Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., writing in an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal on Thursday, all but announced his opposition.

"When we are faced with unpredictable national security crises, we can't afford to have a secretary of defense who has unpredictable judgment," Barrasso wrote.

Other lawmakers have said they are waiting for Hagel's confirmation hearing next Thursday in the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Democrats hold a 55-45 edge in the Senate and would have the votes to confirm Hagel.

"Chuck is a combat veteran and foot soldier who has a unique understanding of the challenges faced by our men and women in uniform, and a practical leader who understands the need for common sense in military spending and national security strategy," Manchin said in a statement.

Coons said he believes Hagel "will be a strong and effective secretary of defense, and I will be proud to vote for his confirmation."

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., who met with Hagel on Thursday, said he had satisfied her concerns and she felt his responses were sincere. A member of the Armed Services Committee, she said she would reserve judgment until after the hearing but described Hagel as well-qualified for the job.

Their statements came shortly after Sen. John Kerry, the president's choice for secretary of state, found himself defending Hagel at his confirmation hearing.

"I know Chuck Hagel. I think he is a strong patriotic former senator, and he will be a strong secretary of defense," Kerry said of Hagel, who, like Kerry, served in Vietnam.

Republican Sen. Bob Corker questioned Kerry about Hagel's support for an 80 percent reduction of U.S. nuclear weapons. Possible reductions and modernization of the nuclear arsenal are major issues for the Tennessee lawmaker, who has the Y-12 nuclear facility in his state.

Corker has expressed concerns about Hagel, questioning whether the Republican's "overall temperament" makes his suitable for the job.

Big banks, under pressure, on defense at Davos

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) ? If there is one place bankers should be able to let down their guard a little, you would think it would be at the World Economic Forum in Davos, an exclusive gathering of 2,500 of the globe's financial and corporate elite.

Yet even here top banking executives found themselves on the defensive. It's a reflection of how big banks ? blamed by some politicians and the public for the 2007 financial crisis and the resulting Great Recession ? are still grappling with pressure from recent scandals and moves toward increasingly complex regulation.

During a panel discussion on global finance at the forum, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon criticized the "huge misinformation" about the risks actually posed by banks.

He and other top bankers at the discussion, including UBS chairman Axel Weber, found themselves stressing that that banks play an essential role in making economies grow ? by lending to businesses so they can invest and expand.

"Banks continue to lend and grow and expand, finance is a critical part of the how the economy is run," he said at an all-star panel where he was challenged both by a top International Monetary Fund official and a hedge fund manager, whose firm is a client of Dimon's bank.

"Everyone I know is trying to do a very good job for their clients," Dimon said.

There have been plenty of negative headlines and investigations over the last year that show banking in a far harsher light: Several top banks are under investigation for rigging key interest rates, HSBC has been fined for allowing money-laundering and Standard Chartered has been penalized for dealing with Iran. Even Dimon's own bank has suffered an embarrassing $6 billion trading loss on complex derivatives.

All of which has only given ammunition to the critics who say banks are too loosely regulated, too unethical and still so large that their collapse would threaten the economy.

Governments and regulators have moved to clamp down on banks and their risky practices since 2007. In the United States, legislation known as Dodd-Frank seeks to avoid taxpayer-funded bailouts of banks by barring them from engaging in risky trading on their own account. The European Union is considering proposals to have banks separate their riskier investment banking operations from the rest of their business. Meanwhile, the British government is moving toward a different proposal to require banks to "ring-fence" their retail banking within their organization.

Beyond that, banks are also being required to hold more financial padding against possible losses through an international agreement known as Basel III.

However, the push to regulate leaves many dissatisfied. Critics of the banking industry claim that some of the new measures ? such as requirements to hold capital buffers against losses ? were in fact around ahead of the 2007 crisis but were ineffective as banks found ways around them.

Banks themselves agree that the capital measures are needed, but they are concerned that, because these new rules are often being imposed on a national or regional basis, they can overlap for banks that do business in more than one country. And there is no one global standard that would level the playing field, and prevent banks from simply moving their operations to places that allowed high-risk practices.

Plus the increased costs involved in following the new rules will hit profits and could even shrink the availability of credit.

To add to the mix, the Basel III rules, which have been accepted by both bank critics and bankers, will not come into effect until 2019.

That sense of dissatisfaction about the state of banks and the attempts to regulate them burst through during the Davos global finance panel.

Min Zhu, the deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund, said the banking industry was "still too big" compared to the size of the global economy. Min also warned that other financial organizations, such as hedge funds, are playing a too-large, too-little regulated role known as "shadow banking" where risky practices that could cause a crisis remain beyond a regulator's reach.

"All the debate going on, and the financial sector has not changed very much. We're not safer yet. Five years on, we are still debating whether we have too much or too little regulation," he said.

"I would say the financial sector has a long way to go."

Axel Weber, chairman of Swiss bank UBS and former head of Germany's central bank, added that global regulators "have clearly made up their minds that banks are too big."

Dimon complained about "huge misinformation" about the risks posed by banks and that regulators were casting their net too wide, with too many agencies involved.

"We're trying to do too much too fast," he said. "Everyone thinks it was one thing that sank the system."

One skeptic of capital requirements is Edward J. Kane, a professor of finance at Boston College. He believes that big banks would likely find a way to circumvent them, as they did before the crisis by moving risk to off-balance sheet entities, for example ? and still had the power to shape regulation in their interests.

"We were told before the crisis that capital requirements on banks would be the medicine that would prevent us from having crises, but they failed," he told The Associated Press.

A better way to discourage excessive risk-taking, Kane proposes, would be to charge banks a simple premium that reflects what the taxpayer would have to pay in case the bank needs to be bailed out.

"There will always be financial crises," he said. "Regulators are always outgunned, outcoached and playing from behind. What we can try to do is control the incentives and make the crises less deep."

Netflix CEO interested in adding Sony movie content

(Reuters) - Netflix Inc wants to bid for movies from Sony Corp to add to its online streaming service alongside films from Walt Disney Co, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said on Wednesday.

Speaking to analysts after the company's quarterly earnings report, Hastings said his appetite for securing exclusive rights to Sony movies after they leave theaters was "just like it was for Disney. It's strong."

"We're interested. We'll see how it works out," Hastings said.

In December, Netflix reached a deal to stream new Disney movies starting in 2016.

Eurogroup approves Robin Hood tax

Eleven Eurozone countries (Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Austria, Portugal, Belgium, Estonia, Greece, Slovakia and Slovenia) have been authorized to start working on a financial transactions tax (the so-called Robin Hood tax). Eurozone finance ministers have given the green light to the measure today, during the Eurogroup meeting held in Brussels. The tax is based on an idea put forward by the economist James Tobin over forty years ago and its current application is aimed at controlling banks and speculative activities, such as high frequency operations, as each agreement will be taxed.

The Spanish Tesoro P?blico held a debt auction on Tuesday during which it sold 2.9 billion euros worth of 3- and 6- month bonds. 1.206 billion euros of 3-month bonds were auctioned at an average yield of 0.441%, compared with 1.195% seen at the previous auction. 1.578 billion euros worth of 6-month bonds, were sold at an average yield of 0.888% versus the previous 1.609%. Following the auction Spanish risk premium remained at the level of 355 points.-FXstreet.com

STORY DETAILS

FALLS CHURCH, Va. (CBSDC) ? Two people and numerous pets are dead following a massive early morning fire in Falls Church.

The blaze began shortly before 3:30 a.m. Wednesday at a home in the 3100 block of Manor Road, authorities say.

Firefighters, who were stationed just five blocks away, could do little as they arrived at the home which was completely engulfed in flames.

The body of one person was discovered inside the home shortly after the fire was extinguished. A second body was located hours later after firefighters combed through the charred remains of the residence, a fire department spokesperson says.

Neighbors say at least two of the three residents of the home were deaf and one was confined to a wheelchair.

A third individual who lives at residence may not have been home at the time of the fire. A person who lives nearby says that person?s car was not in the driveway.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but one neighbor describes being awoken by a thump that he thought was an explosion.

?I started to get up and then I heard the woman next door scream,? he told WNEW. ?I know it was her voice. I heard her scream once and then I heard her scream a second time. By the time I got around my bed to the window? the entire house was engulfed in flame.?

A Fairfax County Fire Department spokesperson confirms two dogs and two cats also perished in the blaze.

The home is ?virtually unrecognizable? according to WNEW reporter Kevin Patrick.

The identities of the victims are being withheld until next of kin is notified.

Oxygen-free energy designed to fuel brain development spurs on growth of cancer

Jan. 23, 2013 ? The metabolic process which fuels the growth of many cancers has its origins in normal brain growth finds a new study published in BioMed Central's open access journal Cancer & Metabolism. Using knock-out mice the study shows that interfering with Hexokinase-2 (Hk2), an enzyme integral to glucose metabolism, reduces the aggressiveness of medulloblastoma, the most common malignant brain tumor in children, and allows long term survival of mice.

Most cells only convert glucose to lactate in the absence of oxygen, for example, during a short burst of intensive exercise (anaerobic glycolysis). However rapidly dividing cells, including many cancer cells, convert glucose to lactate even in the presence of oxygen (aerobic glycolysis).

Researchers from the University of North Carolina have found that Hk2 switches on aerobic glycolysis in progenitor cells of the brain and in medulloblastoma. In the absence of Hk2, brain development was disordered. Additionally they found that deleting the Hk2 gene in mice genetically prone to develop medulloblastoma reduced the aggressiveness of the tumors, allowing long-term survival of the mice.

Dr. Timothy Gershon, who led this study, explained, "As long ago as 1924 Otto Warburg hypothesized that cancers use glycolysis to provide energy for growth even in the presence of oxygen. We found that glycolysis in the presence of oxygen is a developmental process that is co-opted in cancer to support malignant growth. We can now think about targeting this process in patients."

Open access publisher BioMed Central is proud to announce the launch of the Cancer & Metabolism . Professor Chi van Dang, co-Editor-in-Chief, commented that "It has become self-evident that metabolism and bioenergetics are regulated by cancer genes. Cancer & Metabolism is launched uniquely to fulfil the needs of a burgeoning field." Professor Michael Pollak, co-Editor-in-Chief, added that "The scope of Cancer & Metabolism will allow for an interdisciplinary readership including cancer biologists, endocrinologists, oncologists, clinical trialists and population scientists."
